MATTERHORN ULTRAKS – 19th and 20th of August in Zermatt Featured

Written by

Only three days left until the Matterhorn Ultraks kicks off this Friday the 19th of August in Zermatt. Preparations are underway to welcome athletes from around the world to the 4th edition of the Matterhorn Ultraks.

Once again it will be a truly international field with runners from over 52 countries that will head for Zermatt (SUI) to take part in the Matterhorn Ultraks Trail.

Four distances are included in the programme.
The VZS Vertical Zermatt Sunnegga will kick off the week-end on Friday afternoon at 5:30 pm.
On Saturday, the “classic” races will start at 7:30 am with the Skyrunner® World Series Official Race, the 46K,followed by the 30K and 16K.

The top athletes starting the 46K to gather points for the SKY ranking, have to clear 3’600 Meters in vertical distance. Local hero and course designer Martin Anthamatten, will try to defend his winning title from last year. The women’s 2015 winner, Italian Elisa Desco, who is currently ranked 4th, will also be back on the start line.

They will be joined by newcomers to the race, such as Bhim Gurung from Nepal. No doubt the altitude will play in his favour as it did when he won first Series’ race in Yading, China. Others to look out for are Adrien Michaud and Celia Chiron from France, who regularly top the podium, together with Marc Lauenstein. He came second in Zegama and is a firm favourite among the supporters - probably the fastest Swiss dentist around.

All these athletes will also compete for the “Alpina Sky Prize” that rewards the fastest male and female runners between Sunnegga and Riffelalp via the highest point of the Race the Gornergrat (3’130 Meters) with an Alpina Horological Smartwatch. Last year, American Megan Kimmel won the prize and this year she will be aiming for the top of the podium.

Matterhorn Ultraks would not be complete without the kids. 150 children will start in the Kidsrace on Friday afternoon just before the VZS. Godfather of the Race is Sherpa Dawa, he will be competing in the 30K on Saturday. It always is an emotional moment to see the future generation of champions running in the street of Zermatt.

Note that registrations for the 46K, 30K and 16K are sold out.
Registrations online are still possible until Wednesday midday for VZS and “Kids” and on site on Friday from 2pm until 3:30 pm for the Kids and 4:30 pm for the Vertical.

For the spectators, from Friday afternoon, the Church Square will get alive with giant screen, tade stands and entertainment, including the possibility to buy the Matterhorn Ultraks Limited Edition from Compressport.

James

With a Scout leader for a mother, James was always destined to enter the outdoors world. Cubs, Scouts and Cadets came and went, but it wasn’t until a week’s adventurous training put on by his school CCF in Snowdonia, that his passion was found. A wet and wild week didn’t dampen spirits, and the following year he returned with a friend for a week of walking and climbing in the Ogwen valley. Since then James has taken part in trail marathons, fell races and an ultra marathon, as well as racking up countless miles on his own over the Lakeland Fells. A ML trainee, come rain or shine, he’ll be out there GoPro in hand, capturing his exploits.

Preferred activities: Trail/Road/Fell Running, hill walking, road cycling, wild camping

Areas commonly visited :Peak District, North wales, Lakes.
