Records, do they really matter?

A year ago the teahouses and bakeries of Tengboche and Lobuche and the shops of Namche Bazaar were filled to bursting point with the annual influx of climbers heading for Mount Everest and its base camp. Within weeks the world awoke to headlines of mutiple deaths, photographs of literally hundreds of climbers queueing on the upper slopes of the mountain and the predictable newspaper inches with the Mail calling it a "high level lunatic asylum where human compassion is sacrificed…
