Women's Mammut T Advanced GTX walking boots Reviewed

Written by Fiona Outdoors

As you can imagine I own many, many pairs of walking boots and they are each suited to different types of walking in different seasons. But until I was sent the Mammut T Advanced GTX walking boots I didn’t have a pair of summer mountain hiking boots. On first encounter these boots looked ideal. Robust and grippy yet lightweight and comfortable.

What Mammut say about the boots

·      Flexible–fit velour leather outer shell.

·      Secure and blister-free walking thanks to “Base Fit” lacing system

·      High-quality Hybrid Shell

·      Liquid rubber protection and EVA wedge with integrated Mammut Rolling Concept.

·       Cushioning memo foam

·      Vibram Scale sole

·      GORE-TEX Performance Comfort Footwear membrane

·      Rubber toe cap

A size UK 11 pair weighs 1456g, which is excellent for a summer mountina hiking boot.

On test: Mammut T Advanced GTX walking boots

I tested a pair of women’s UK8. I can confirm they feel lovely and light. While the sole is stiff and robust the upper feels remarkably comfortable and flexible. The laces pull the boot together easily and they remain securely tied while walking.

The inner of the boots is indeed comfortable. The memo foam insert offers lots of cushioning, yet in a supportive way. The boots are ideally padded – not too much and not too little. The foot doesn’t move around much, which is most likely why you do not suffer blisters in the boot.

The soles feel stiff enough for rocky terrain. While walking on a damp day at high-level in Scotland the boots did a grand job of gripping wet rock and muddy grass yet without feeling too heavy and stiff. If I compare these to winter walking boots and trail summer boots I’d say they are ideally “in the middle”.

The boots felt nice and light for walking uphill, a good and comfy for wlaking downhill. The Vibram “scale” sole is a new one for me but it did a good job of keeping my upright and on my feet even in wet conditions.

I haven’t worn the boots for hundreds of miles so I can’t say if they will withstand everything that summer Scottish hiking can throw at them but the rubber features on the toe and forefoot of the boots seem to be of good quality and would likely hold the boots together even after lots of wear.

For rrp £150, the Mammut boots are a reasonable buy for summer higher-level and off-the beaten-trail walking.

I have only one criticisms and it’s personal. I found the boots to be a bit wide for my super-slim foot. Most people with a normal width foot would find them to be an excellent fit I imagine but I had to rally pull the lacing system together to properly support my foot. However, the UK8 is a good length and while I sometime need an UK8.5 these boots were a good fit.
