Steve Birkinshaw smashes Joss Naylor's 27 year old Wainwrights record

Written by

It took Alfred Wainwright 11 years and seven books to describe them all, it takes most people a lifetime to climb them all and it took the legendary Joss Naylor 7 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes to run them all but in one of the great athletics achievements of our time Steve Birkinshaw has today completed a continuous circuit of the 214 Wainwrights in just 6 days 13 hours. With over 510km of running and 36,000m of ascent the record has stood since 1987. Setting off from Keswick Moot Hall at 9:00am last Saturday he arrived back at almost exactly 22:00 tonight (Friday) to take almost 12 hours off the record in an incredible time of 6 days,13hours.

Runners joined Steve at almost every top throughout his run

Steve Birkinshaw, 45, is an accomplished adventure racer and fell runner.  He is a multiple winner of the Original Mountain Marathon (formerly the KIMM) and in 2012 won the Dragon’s Back Race, believed by many to be the toughest adventure race on the planet.  Starting on Saturday 14 June, he aimed to beat the current Wainwrights record by 11 hours and despite slipping almost 2 hours behind schedule on the final day he made the summit of Cat Bells, the final Wainwright, with over an hour in hand on his own schedule. Joined by up to 100 people on the final stretch from Newlands Hause Steve has raised over £10,000 between The Samson Centre, a local MS charity, and the National MS Society. Steve's blog, with some great photographs gives more details of the run with daily entries.
