Stu Thomas

Stu Thomas

A former bank worker now working for a major national outdoor company Stu is an avid mountain and road cyclist and tests kit for MyOutdoors around the BreconBeacons and South Wales. As a member of South Wales Mountaineering Club stu, along with partner Julie (who also tests for us) also both climbs and walks. When not tearing up mountain bike trails Stu can be found on the road either commuting by bike or taking part in muscle draining sportives in the Peak District.

With his retail experience and insight Stu is able to help us with real time buying trends and reviews based on a wide range of kit for comparisons. Stu has also started writing for MyOutdoors Blog, first documenting his "conversion" to a road cyclist and soon to be reliving some of his recent cycle tours that have taken in both the Balkans and Estonia/Latvia. You may even be able to pick him out in photos of wild camping in Magillicuddy's Reeks on the site - Stu gets around!

Bolle Aeromax: Tested and Reviewed

I've managed to get a few rides in this summer. Unlike a lot of people I actually adore the heat. I think I'm actually part lizard and out on the bike the feeling of the sum on my skin is pretty close to my idea of heaven. Of course with all this sun it's been the perfect chance to test out some sunglasses including the striking Aeromax from French company Bolle.

There's an age old debate amongst road cyclists about sartorial elegance. Should kit match? Obviously one doesn't want to mix up colours and cause a clash thus looking a fool, but should brands be mixed? A lot of cyclists don't believe they should and I've started to come around to the idea especially when the Craft Monument MSR set landed on my doorstep.

A new 19-mile mass participation cycling event on traffic-free roads was launched on Wednesday as part of the Mayor of London's Prudential RideLondon 2018, the world's greatest festival of cycling, with 100,000 riders expected to participate in eight different events over the weekend of 28-29 July.

The UK's cycling awareness week, Bike Week 2018, takes place from 9th - 17th June and encourages everyone to hop on a bike and get out on two wheels, via a range of events taking place across the country.

London’s coolest cycling event - MR PORTER Nocturne - will be held on 9th June from 2pm - 10pm. The event is popular with cycling enthusiasts of all levels, including Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy.

Smith Attack Max : Tested and Reviewed

Sunglasses are important. In one of my former incarnations as a wannabe rock singer I put my failure to make the big time down to a lack of decent shades. It had nothing to do with the rise of grunge or a lack of talent but my sunglasses. Amazingly these days as a cyclist I rediscovered the importance of the correct eyewear and not just for looking good but also to protect the eyes. Who knew? Anyway over the years I've been through a few pairs until about 5 years ago whilst flush with the redundancy payout of a different incarnation I purchased a premium pair which were just about perfect I thought so when the Smith Optics Attack Max arrived for test they had a lot to be compared to.

London – May 2018 – Paying tribute to 4 years of collaboration, the UCI World Tour team, AG2R La Mondiale, is the first to wear Bollé's latest cycling dedicated sunglass model SHIFTER. SHIFTER will complete the whole team's outfit and be under the spotlight for the first Grand Tour of the season, the Giro d'Italia

The eyes of the world’s cycling community will be firmly fixed on Inverness this weekend, as the ever-popular Etape Loch Ness returns to the Highlands on Sunday, April 29.

Now in its fifth year, Etape Loch Ness has become one of the most popular events on the Scottish sporting calendar. Five thousand and six hundred participants will take to the roads around the iconic Loch Ness for a 66-mile round trip, taking part in a closed-road sportive hailed by many as one of the most scenic routes in the world.

OD Designs TrackStand goes to KickStarter

A couple of years ago I reviewed a product from OD Designns called the TrackStand. A simple design that allowed any bike to be stored upright by the stays enabling simple fettling or cleaning. Even better they could be linked together.
