Introduction to Fjern: Beyond Boundaries Featured

Written by

New on the market this Autumn Winter season is UK based Fjernthe team involved are inspired by the Nordic mindset of being outdoors no matter what the weather.

Fjern were brought to our attention by one of our contributors, Alan McIntosh, who got the Orkan hardshell. He wore it on a day out in the Cairngorms and was very impressed by it,you can read about it here.

I got in touch with Fjern and spoke to Tara, Head of Product Design and she let us now why they moulded their thinking and design concepts around the Nordic mindset?

"We chose the Nordic mindset as it seemed to sum up how we all felt about the outdoors. Despite months of darkness through the Winter the Norwegians don't view it as something to be endured, but something to be enjoyed. Everyone should have access to the outdoors and the positive effect it can have on your mental state of mind, and also the sense of achievement it can give you."

The guys at Fjern were kind enough to send over a couple of their range for us to test at My Outdoors.

The Vandringmidlayer, a neat fitting breathable and stretchy technical hoodie that moves with all the actions you do. Initial thoughts on the first day out was it breathed really well and with a netted baselayer it allowed sweat out and did well at blocking the wind.

Also the Arktis Down Gilet, as the guys at Fjern say “a staple in your Alpine wardrobe.” I couldn’t agree more, the shell is resilient. It’s water resistant and windresistant shell which encompasses Teflon coated ethically produced down to keep your core warm. A lot of people don’t see the benefit of the gilet but  if it keeps the core warm, is small enough to be stowed away when it’s either too warm or needs swapped out/added to for something warmer then why is that not beneficial?

I’ll be getting the gear out in to the mountains and pushing it, as Fjern want, ”Beyond Boundaries!” I’ll come back to you and let you know what I think.

Since Fjern released their initial range in winter I asked Tara if there were plans to add to the range in spring/summer?

As AW17 is our first season we'll only be adding a few new pieces to the range for SS18, including Trousers and Shorts and probably some base layer offerings. The final details are still be firmed up at the moment.

I look forward to testing the Vandring and Arktis and letting you all know how it performs. We’ll keep an eye on this new brand and what they bring us as they expand their range in the future.

Davy Wright

Most at home in the outdoors, preferably on top of something big and pointy. Scotland is Davy's playground, which is why he doesn’t mind getting wet. But winter is where it’s at. Hiking, scrambling, camping and a bit of climbing when I can. Sucker for a ridge. At a lower altitude he try getting out on his bike and run if he has to.

Davy describes himself as "a bit of a gear geek, maybe less of the bit. I like to see how things work or don’t!" In following this line Davy has become a respected and authoritative blogger over the last few years, working with many of the UK's major manufacturers and retailers.

Preferred activities: Hillwalking, camping, scrambling, trying to get better at climbing/ice climbing, cycling/mountain biking

Areas commonly visited: Lochaber, Cairngorms, Lake District
