The company behind the Finnish brand Reima is founded in 1944 and leads the market as a kids-only producer of active wear for all climates. Aimed at ages from 0 to 12, Reima believes kids are entitled to free play, unrestricted movement and learning by doing. To this end, Reima develops apparel and footwear that are designed to be easy to care for, to last from one user to the next and to help kids feel comfortable in any weather.
Chill out with Xylitol Cool
When the sun’s shining and the summer heat is on, it can be tough to keep kids cool and smiling. But thanks to the innovative tech of Reima Xylitol Cool that lowers body temperature, kids can play longer and harder all summer long.
Cooling effect based on edible sweeteners
The smooth, elastic Reima Xylitol Cool fabric gets its cooling power from xylitol and erythritol. Both are naturally occurring substances that are used as low-calorie sweeteners, so the finish is safe and non-toxic.
Xylitol is found in certain fruits, vegetables and plants. Originally a 19th-century German invention, Xylitol was extracted from birch trees and commercialised by Finnish experts in the 1970s. Since then, Xylitol has been used as a sugar substitute for food and chewing gum. It has the sweet taste of sugar without the downers—in fact, research shows it has 40% less calories, helps to fight against bacteria, and can even be good for our teeth.
Erythritol is a similar but entirely calorie-free sweetener, which occurs naturally in some fruit and fermented foods. Erythritol is manufactured from glucose by fermentation with a yeast.
How Xylitol Cool fabric works
Together, in Reima’s special textile finish, Erythritol and Xylitol absorb heat when they encounter body moisture. This finish doesn’t just create a cooling sensation—it actually cools the skin by 1-3 °C (1.8 – 5.4 °F). After about 10 minutes of wear, body moisture activates the finish, which then starts absorbing heat. It’s a genius way to help the body’s own cooling system work even better.
Reima Xylitol Cool fabric is quick-dry, easy-care, and feels soft and comfortable to the touch. The cooling effect of the safe, non-toxic finish lasts for at least 20 washes. The finish, developed by the Dutch company Tanatex, was also used in the first Reima Xylitol Cool product collection for kids, launched in summer 2019.
