Reima Launches AI-Driven Weather App to Make Dressing Kids Easier

Written by

Reima, the Finland-based premium brand for kids’ active wear, has launched its first weather-based mobile app. Using the free app, parents can quickly and clearly see how to dress children to be comfortable and safe in any weather.

Reima was founded in 1944 and leads the market as a kids-only producer of active wear for all climates. Aimed at kids aged 0 to 12, the brand mission is to enable kids’ joy of movement. To this end, Reima develops not only clothing, accessories and footwear that endure heavy use, but also apps and services that ease families’ lives.

The new mobile app, called ’Reima Weather’, is a handy tool for parents for instantly getting daily and weekly weather-based clothing instructions. The underlying philosophy links to a familiar proverb, known in Finland and internationally too, that with the right gear, there's no such thing as bad weather.

Reima’s Chief Experience Officer Johanna Sarviharju explains the thinking behind the service:

Reima Picture 2“Throughout the 75 years we’ve been creating outfits for active kids, the weather has always been an integral part of what we do. The weather is our influencer, motivator, sometimes an obstacle and a voice of reason; a challenge for which we always needed to find a solution,” she says, and continues:

The key reason we created the Reima Weather app is to help parents toward hassle-free parenthood. We have a long expertise of the harsh Finnish climate and have learned a lot from the mobile development work for the ReimaGO activity sensor. Putting these two together, we realised we’re exactly in the spot for offering young parents an easy way to learn how to dress their kids for adventure”.

The guide that matches your gear to any weather

The app helps parents understand at a glance what the weather will be for today and plan ahead with future weather predictions. You can get weather-based suggestions on how your kid should dress and be alerted when you might need specific gear for later that day. Furthermore, Reima Weather App can help back up parents’ decisions, e.g. by presenting facts that justify and explain the need of putting on rain clothes, should kids happen to question it.

Your kid deserves only the best

Through the app, parents can also get further information on the important aspects and features of what makes perfect outdoor gear, or what kind of properties make the best shoes for the season. The app even gives advice and inspiration on fun things to do with the whole family regardless of the weather, ranging from how the kids in the Nordics spend their time in the forest to awesome new ways to create new play worlds in the city.Reima Picture 3

Development work for the next phase continues

During spring 2020, Reima will enrich Reima Weather app with smart clothing suggestions. The outfits presented will be based on Artificial Intelligence that combines the weather and your personal clothing preferences. Using the Reima products’ thermal characteristics and real time local weather feed, the number of possible clothes combinations presented will be practically limitless. Also, the language offering will be extended further in addition to the current language options (English, German, Finnish).

Reima Weather wins esteemed Nordic award at ISPO fair

In January, at the world’s largest sports branch event, ISPO Munich, Reima Weather app was awarded. The app won first prize in the Scandinavian Outdoor Award technology category. The jury stated:

This app gives parents and kids the chance to learn in a playful way together about the proper clothing and layering for outside activities. The jury liked that the app addresses children’s and parents’ need in an appealing package with language and graphics that speaks to both. The in-app challenges are an attractive way to get families more involved in the outdoors.
