Launch of Microfibre Roadmap v2.0 aims for step-change in work to reduce fibre fragmentation from textiles

Written by

The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) has released details of an updated route for the apparel industry to achieve a global commitment to work towards zero impact of fibre fragmentation from textiles to the natural environment.

The Microfibre Roadmap v2.0 is published today and will inform actions taken by the organisation and signatories to the Microfibre 2030 Commitment.

The first version of the Microfibre Roadmap was launched in 2021, alongside the Microfibre 2030 Commitment. It aligned the global apparel sector’s work to reduce fibre fragmentation, with clear goals, workstreams and timelines. That launch enabled a significant scaling up of fabric testing to generate deeper understandings of the multifaceted challenge that faced the industry. Led by TMC and informed by insights from the Microfibre Data Portal, there has since been an acceleration of knowledge and understanding that has led to a point of strategic reflection, and the development of an updated roadmap that meets evolving topic priorities and industry needs.

The Microfibre Roadmap v2

The Microfibre Roadmap v2.0 reasserts the ambitions set out in the Microfibre 2030 Commitment, and aims to achieve a step-change in how the industry collaborates to address the topic. Since the introduction of the first version of the roadmap, the issue of fibre fragment pollution has become much more high profile. The Microfibre Roadmap v2.0 reflects that and aims to harness it, to keep the subject centre stage and build a new era and level of cooperation and action.

Dr Kelly Sheridan, Chief Executive Officer of TMC, comments: “Since 2018, The Microfibre Consortium has driven significant progress in enabling the sector to take action on fibre fragmentation. The launch of the Microfibre 2030 Commitment and the first version of the Microfibre Roadmap were key steps along the way, helping to align and mobilise the apparel industry. We broke down silos and built bridges, and achieved so much of what we set out to do in the early years. Peripheral action on fibre fragmentation is becoming a thing of the past, and now we need to change up another gear.

“The launch of the Microfibre Roadmap v2.0 is a rallying call for our industry, to really bring this topic to centre stage and enter a new era of collaboration. We’re grateful to all our signatories for their invaluable support so far. Now, we are ready to kick-start the next phase, addressing multiple pathways, connecting datasets, predicting shedding rates, and maximising impactful actions.

Together, using the updated roadmap, we are ready to continue our journey with greater clarity and confidence.”
