Electrifying efoil water sports first for North Wales as part of the Year of Outdoors

Written by

To launch Visit Wales’ Year of Outdoors, the UK’s first efoil school and one of the only places to experience efoiling in Europe has opened in the beautifully-sheltered Menai Straits.

FoilRide joins a number of innovations in adventure tourism in Wales, including the world’s fastest zip line at Zip World in Snowdonia, and the world’s first public inland surfing lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia.

A one-of-a-kind electric hydrafoil surfboard adventure, FoilRide has to be seen to be believed, enabling riders to feel as though they are flying above the water on a uniquely silent and smooth journey.

Despite being one of the world’s newest and most unique experiences, riders over 16 years old can learn in a matter of hours – with just a token of balance and co-ordination required.

Having emerged in the water sports mecca of Puerto Rico, efoiling is the latest global sustainable adventure trend, providing an epic experience of floating over water. It is set to become the latest unique visitor experience in the world-renowned, action-packed centre of north Wales.

The Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said: “The Year of Outdoors is about celebrating that inherent connection between Wales’ people and the outdoors. We will be offering visitors the opportunity to experience the outdoors like never before, emphasising the important link between the outdoors and our well-being, and inviting visitors to experience our world-class outdoor offer.”

Efoils – surfboards with electric motors that fly above a hydrofoil wing – have only very recently become commercially available and even now in only a selection of places in the world. The ability to recharge from a renewable energy source makes them an ideal way to interact with the beauty of the Welsh outdoors sustainably.

Phil Scott, co-owner of FoilRide, said: “Only a very small number of people worldwide have had the amazing and unique experience of efoiling. And now you can do it in the jaw-dropping landscape of North Wales in a first for the UK. We can’t wait to see people experiencing it for the first time with the dramatic backdrop of the Menai Straits.”

Tom Ashwell, also a co-owner of FoilRide, added: “Adventure tourism is becoming more focused on sustainability, and our aim is to offer activities that are kind to the environment as well as being unforgettable. Our goal is to put Wales on the map as a centre for sustainable efoiling globally.”

FoilRide in Anglesey is the only place in the UK with an efoil school, making it the only place you can experience it in the UK without owning an efoil.
