For the first time Terry will be using computer controlled motion sensor equipment to automate night time time lapse sequences where the camera tracks in microscopic movements through the shoot. With time lapse being a popular feature of both the Scafell Pike film and The Cairngorms in Winter with Chris Townsend the new equipment should allow smoother and more expressive sequences while also reducing the weight he has to carry.
The other big news for the elvellyn film is that for the first time Terry will be filming in 4K. 4K has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall giving detail HDTV can't get close to. 4K is seen as one of the major emerging markets for both commercial and domestic viewing with the technology already having dedicated channels on some satellite services. While filming in 4K the editing for the HD release will be carried out a 2K resolution which should result in improved picture even when reduced to 1080p. Until recently 4K cameras were too bulky to use outside a production studio but the camera being used for the Helvellyn film is the size of a DSLR.
The news of the Helvellyn film comes as the "Official Trailer" for Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike is released. With the film now submitted for both Kendal and Banff festivals a 5 minute edit was required and while the film had several trailers during filming and production and various cuts between a 20 minute festival edit and the full two hour+ production the new trailer gives a more complete precis of what to expect.
