The Wave Project started in 2010 as a voluntary group funded by the NHS in Cornwall, with the aim of using volunteers to provide one-to-one surfing lessons for young people with mental health issues as a way of getting them outside, doing physical exercise and feeling more confident about themselves. This first project achieved outstanding results.

The results of the pilot showed that going surfing once a week helped clients feel more confident, improved their outlook and gave them a sense of fun. The participants were young people who other services had been unable to reach and the evaluation of the project showed that the surfing course had led them to feel more accepted, positive and comfortable with their lives. Encouraged by the results, The Wave Project was established as a not-for-profit company.

Since then, The Wave Project has grown and developed into an award-winning scheme, using the same methods of involving local surfers to help young people reduce anxiety and improve their emotional health. New projects have been set up all over the UK, including in Wales and Scotland.

Based in Braunton, North Devon, dryrobe had been working with and supporting the local Wave Project scheme at Croyde beach and are now excited to partnering with the Wave Project as a whole, to bring the benefits of dryrobe to even more young people as they progress through their surfing sessions.

Joe Taylor, Wave Project Founder and CEO says: “We’re stoked to be working in partnership with dryrobe to keep our young surfers warm and dry on their surf therapy courses at The Wave Project. It’s great to have such amazing robes to keep our students happy as they learn to surf. Thanks dryrobe!”

Gideon Bright, dryrobe Founder and Director commented: “We’re very excited to be partnering with The Wave Project and supporting the incredible work they do. We share the same values of time spent outside, keeping fit and enjoying the great outdoors - our products are all about making outdoor activity more fun and accessible for all - so this relationship really is a perfect fit.”
