Vertebrate Publishing at Sheffield Adventure Film Festival
Commenting on the anniversary milestone, Managing Director Jon Barton said: ‘We’re thrilled to be celebrating ten years of publishing. After a decade of producing books, Vertebrate still has its edge. We’re incredibly lucky to work with the authors and organisations that we do: Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, the British Mountaineering Council – it’s through these kinds of partnerships that we can continue to produce leading outdoor books. ‘The next chapter will no doubt bring its challenges – the way that people consume books is changing, as is their means of discovering climbing, running, walking or biking routes. But we’re excited to respond to these challenges; we’ll be expanding our ebook programme and continuing to develop innovative online resources for people wanting to get outside and do whatever it is that inspires them.’
Design flair and unbridled enthusiasm for its subject are the essential ingredients that have helped Vertebrate to grow in a competitive industry. Its focus remains firmly on publishing what it believes is important – whether it’s a guidebook that helps people to pursue their passions, a biography that captures inspiring adventures or a photography book revealing the beauty of our natural environment. A more recent development has been the company’s expansion into fiction, with a focus on mountaineering novels for children and young adults. Through collaboration with schools and libraries Vertebrate is working to encourage more young people to get reading and to explore their outdoor world.
During the last eighteen months Vertebrate has acquiredrespected hill walking, mountaineering and rock climbing publisher Bâton Wicks, and the much-loved walking and climbing publisher, Millrace Outdoor. It also acquiredSteepEdge, an online library of handpicked adventure films available to download or rent.
With autumn 2014 releases including Statement, the biography of legendary British climber Ben Moon, and the eagerly anticipated The Great Mountain Crags of Scotland, Vertebrate looks set to continue its trend of producing inspiring books for the outdoor community.
