As an active supporter of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA), Nikwax works closely with the outdoor industry to promote sustainable, PFAS-free solutions and stronger environmental protections across Europe. This includes organising and supporting fundraising events at major trade shows and using its platform to advocate for improved regulation and faster action on harmful chemicals.
Dan Yates, Executive Director EOCA, comments: “PFAS is permanently damaging to both freshwater ecosystems and soil health. Whilst it is good to see the UK Government launching their “PFAS – Plan” we need to see stronger, faster action on the removal of PFAS from supply chains using the strong example set by companies such as Nikwax who use innovation to reduce environmental harm.”
Nikwax’s Chief Operating Officer Jon Nash adds: “Our partnership with EOCA reflects a shared commitment to reducing the industry’s chemical footprint and protecting wild places. The Government’s recognition of the need for improved PFAS testing, better understanding of health and environmental risks, and clearer public communication is a welcome step. However, the absence of any clear commitment to restricting or banning PFAS represents a missed opportunity for decisive leadership.”
Nikwax has been PFAS-free since inception in 1977 and has never used PFAS or aerosols in its products. This long-standing commitment demonstrates that safer alternatives are not only possible but proven - making continued reliance on guidance and future reviews increasingly hard to justify.
With the EU already implementing further PFAS restrictions and exploring a universal ban, Nikwax is urging the UK Government to strengthen its PFAS action plan with clear timelines and firm regulatory action. Without this, the UK risks falling behind at a time when both industry innovation and scientific understanding point clearly towards the need to phase out these persistent and harmful chemicals.
