Salewa Ortles Light Mid PTX: Two boots… Two design solutions.

Written by

Remember when it was all so simple, and boots were either B1, B2 or B3?

Ah, different times… these days things are more complex.  A new generation of mountain boots has appeared, bridging the fast-and-light need for light weight and flexibility, with the ability to use crampons on occasion.

One such boot is the Salewa Ortles Light Mid PTX (£260.00). This new, technical boot is designed for mountaineers who want to move fast in all conditions, combining lightweight protection with climbing performance. The Pomoca Alpine Light outsole ensures grip and traction while Salewa’s new Edging Plate 2 technology and a stabiliser in the rear of the midsole offer torsional stiffness; the boot will accept semi-automatic crampons. The 3F system with Kevlar cables cradles the heel, and a customisable footbed ensures a perfect fit. The PFC-free nylon fabric upper has a Powertex PFC-free membrane and a protective rubber rand, plus laces made from recycled materials.

Then again, there are times when mountaineers will choose a burlier design. The reality of many Scottish winter ascents will involve kicking steps and standing on chilly stances, so that’s when a boot such as the Salewa Ortles Ascent Mid GTX (£325.00) comes into its own.

The Ortles Ascent features Vibram’s new Alpine Guide sole, combining a smooth ‘climbing zone’ at the toe with a tread pattern specifically developed for traction on snow and ice. The midsole balances double-density PU cushioning with stiffness from a crampon-compatible nylon/fibreglass/carbon insert. The upper uses robust, high-quality 2.2 mm leather combined with a Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort membrane that features an integrated layer of waterproof, breathable insulation to keep feet warm and dry. The Ankle Protector System (APS) provides ankle support, while Salewa’s 3F system adds stability by connecting the heel and instep to the lacing area, ensuring a more precise wrapping fit.
