Three Vertebrate titles shortlisted for 2014 Banff Mountain Book Festival Competition

Leading mountaineering literature publisher Vertebrate Publishing is celebrating following the shortlisting of three of its titles for the 2014 Banff Mountain Book Competition.

This is the 21st year of the prestigious Canadian awards, which represent the biggest prizes in publishing in the outdoor, adventure and environment genres. The competition attracts some of the world’s most recognised names in mountain literature, while welcoming submissions from promising up-and-coming talent.

Vertebrate, which has previously won two awards at the competition, including the Grand Prize, has titles featured in two of this year’s five categories. Philip Temple’s eBook-only mountaineering novel The Mantis has been shortlisted for the Mountain Fiction and Poetry category, while Hanging On by Martin Boysen and One Day As A Tiger by John Porter are among the six titles selected for the Mountain and Wilderness Literature category.

 

Following the announcement of the shortlist, Vertebrate’s Publishing Manager John Coefield commented: ‘This year’s shortlist features many strong titles, so we’re chuffed to bits that both Martin and John have made the shortlist for this year’s Banff awards, especially following Martin’s nomination for the Boardman Tasker Prize. These are two important mountaineering books, which have been some years in the making. Furthermore, to see Banff shortlisting our eBook-only novel The Mantis is testament to the strength of Philip’s writing and the festival’s modern approach to literature.’

Coming only a fortnight after two of its books were shortlisted for the Boardman Tasker Prize, the announcement from Banff confirms Vertebrate’s position as one of the UK’s leading producers of outdoor books and eBooks following ten years in the trade.

The Banff Mountain Book Competition category winners are due to be announced in October, with the winner of the Grand Prize to be announced on Thursday 6 November 2014 at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.
