2024 Cape Wrath Ultra - The position after the first 2 days

Written by

The first two days of the 2024 Cape Wrath Ultra have been completed. On Sunday 19 May, 172 runners from 19 nations set off on the eight-day, 400km journey from Treslaig near Fort William to Cape Wrath Lighthouse at the north-westerly point of Great Britain.

Participants who are still in the full race have now completed 94km, including the second day’s route through remote and spectacular areas of Knoydart. The UK’s Lewis Taylor is the overall leader, over 20 minutes ahead of Ludwig Antilli from Switzerland, with Germany’s Jan Fischer another 18 minutes behind him. UK athletes fill the top three places in the women’s race, led by Bridget Glaister, with Elsa Morgan second and Charlotte Hurst third.

The runners have faced warm and sunny weather during the first two days of the race. Dry conditions underfoot have helped on occasions, but the testing terrain and heat has also taken its toll on the field, which is now down to 141 in the full race. Other participants have stayed with the event and are taking on the shorter Cape Wrath Explorer option for the rest of the event.

Bridget Glaister was one of the pre-race favourites and is enjoying the experience of running through Scotland. Speaking after day two, she commented: “It’s been a great day. I’ve really enjoyed the terrain. However, I think I preferred the constant hills of Dragon’s Back Race – it’s easier than all this running! I don’t know Scotland, so this is really good fun. I’m two years older than at the Dragon’s Back Race – I’m just hoping to finish.

“I’ve fallen into two bogs today – the first one just my thigh went down, but the second one was a full body immersion. It was funny!”

On her position at the front of the race, Bridget added: “Pressure or what?”
