How to plan a multi-generational cruise holiday

Written by

Planning a holiday with your family is such a great way to make long-lasting memories. Giving grandparents and children precious time together is a gift like no other.

Finding the right trip can be tricky, though. You need to balance everyone’s comfort and activity levels whilst making sure they are happy. A great option is a trip on a cruise. Here are some tips to help you have the best multi-generational cruise holiday.

Before you can book anything, write down the needs of every traveller. This could include kids’ clubs, spas, live shows or even reading nooks. This way you can narrow down cruise lines which fit what you need.

Next, think about departure destinations. You will need somewhere that is convenient for as many people as possible to prevent extra costs for hotels the night before you leave. If you all reside in the south, for example, cruises from Southampton are your best bet.

Selecting comfortable accommodations

There are lots of different room types on board a cruise which will suit different needs. If you wanted to keep the family together you could book family suites. Make sure older members of the family are OK with this, though, as early morning wake-ups might be difficult for them!

Another alternative is adjoining rooms. This keeps everyone together but can create physical boundaries if you all need them. This is especially helpful if you have people who like naps during the day but others still need to access their rooms.

Pre-book activities

When thinking about the activities you are going to enjoy together, it is best to book a few in advance. Don’t overload everyone – stick to one or two a day. For example, mini golf in the morning followed by a pizza-making class before tea is a good mix without being exhausting.

Try not to worry about splitting the family up for activities. Whilst an hour at a soft play-style activity is heaven for under 10s, teenagers may find this a bit tedious. You could always book them different fun at the same time or let them have some downtime.

Keep a flexible schedule

Planned activities scattered throughout your time on board are great for breaking up the days but downtime is just as important. Ensuring your family has time to recharge is the main point of a holiday, especially for adult travellers.

Sometimes the best memories are made when everyone is relaxed and enjoying each other’s company. Try to find time in the day for people to just sit together. This could be in your rooms or on deck looking out over the sea. Wherever you are, enjoy time with your family.
