Brasher Kanaga GTX Reviewed

Written by

Overall View
Overall a very good 3 season boot ideally suited to trekking, and mountain walking in early spring and early winter.
Real World Test
Brasher traditionally favour a slightly wider fit so it came as a surprise that the Kanaga GTX initially felt slightly narrow. Despite this the upper also felt as though it overlapped the sole unit to the point of being unbalanced on first use. After a couple of uses, however, both the narrowness of the fit and the balance issues soon disappeared.

The Nubuck leather upper comes pre-oiled and has a traditional look, but with a GoreTex liner for additional protection against water. In practice the liner handles everything from wet grass and puddles to stream crossing without a second thought, although in the warmer temperatures of summer it does become noticeably warmer.

Where the Brasher Kanaga GTX excels is in its ability to handle rough ground, where the combination of an insole with a foam insert on the heel and variable compression insert in the heel unit make their presence felt. Looking at the boot there's an immediately obvious light brown insert in the heel which extends from the rear of the heel around the outstep side; pressing on this with the thumb you can feel the difference in compressibility compared to the darker brown as it goes around the instep side of the heel. The sole gives minimal flex to meet the requirements of early winter walking without being too stiff for use all year round, and the Vibram® Foura was a revelation when scrambling on wet rock, giving very good levels of grip.

The memory foam padded ankle gives both support and comfort, although it may feel a little high for those accustomed to a more modern styled mid-boot. For year round use the Kanaga GTX is something of a compromise, weighing considerably more than many of today's lightweight boots yet not quite stiff enough to cope with more technical climbing in winter. Where it really does come into its own is the transition periods between winter and spring and autumn and winter, offering an optimal balance between support, flex and comfort with the benefit of complete waterproofing and a degree of breathability.
