Darn Tough Northstar Over The Calf Cushion Ski Socks: Tested and Reviewed

Written by Julie Vine

One thing about outdoorsy types is that we all love socks, this may baffle the rest of the world but to us a good pair of socks is essential to a good day out, a bad pair of socks can ruin your day, your feet and possibly the next few days if the damage is bad enough so when I was asked to try out a pair of Darn Tough ski socks I was all up for it.

It’s not that I have need of anymore ski socks, I have 6 pairs and I get to ski only six days a year (sadly) so at the ripe old age of 51 I recon I have enough ski socks to last me the rest of my life, I probably have enough of every type of sock to last me the rest of my life to be honest.

What they say at Darn Tough:

A hint of winter heritage meets modern Merino Wool in the Northstar, an over-the-calf cushioned ski and ride sock that will have you longing for Powder 8s, method grabs, and your parents’ old school sweater stash.

Now my ski boots are a racing fit, not because I ski fast, far from it but that’s what fits my narrow feet which means the socks have more work to do keeping me warm due to the lighter and less bulky style of boots providing less insulation and the precise custom fit removes any option to wear more than one pair of socks at a time.

As a change to the usual alpine ski trip this year I went to Lapland to the resort of Levi 170 km inside the Arctic Circle and the weather on the first days skiing was -30 deg C so a challenge for any winter kit. Did my feet stay warm? Of course not but I managed to stay out for a couple of hours at a time before needing to go in for a warm and by that time I was getting cold all over so I was happy enough with that.

The next day a positively balmy -17 was fairer challenge for the socks and as low a temperature as most people will ever get to ski in, I am happy to report my feet stayed at a comfortable temperature all day. The socks kept my feet very dry, wicking away any sweat when I was inside for an hour or so après ski and came off my feet at the end of the day as fresh as they went on and after a second day on the slopes they were just as good with a distinct lack of crunchiness. I did have a couple of my other pairs with me but I chose to wash these out in travel wash and wear them every day, they a good socks, the kind of socks that you can forget about wearing and concentrate on your skiing instead.
