Keen Debut the WK400

:Following three years of development and over five thousand miles of testing, KEEN unveils the WK400, a revolutionary shoe designed specifically to make walking more enjoyable and fun.

Published in Gear News

In Spring 2023, hybrid footwear disruptors KEEN shook up the footwear industry as they unveiled their KEEN.CURVE™ technology, debuting in the revolutionary KEEN WK400 walking shoe. Designed from the ground up to create a unique rolling feeling, this innovative technology enabled the wearer to experience the sensation of constant motion and forward momentum with every step. Following its acclaimed launch, the WK400 returns in a fresh new colour palette for SS24, with the collection bolstered with new models premiering using this unique engineered platform; the WK450 and WK450 Sandal.

Following almost three years and some 10,000 hours of design and development, KEEN’s R & D team discovered walking is not a ‘one size fits all’ pursuit and that the specific geometry of the KEEN.CURVE™ and last shape could be carefully altered to support and enhance use during specific types of activity – more curve and momentum when walking for fitness, less curve for casual walking and just being on your feet all day (the higher the number, the flatter the plate).

Keen WK450

Designed with this in mind, the new WK450 and WK450 sandal feature a modified full-length nylon plate specifically tuned to maintain constant curve geometry for a smooth, rolling feeling during everyday walking and leisure on and off the trail. Whether hot footing it to the station, scooting out for a coffee or taking the dog for a quick stroll, comfort has been optimised, with a generous toe spring giving a smooth and easy transition from heel strike through to toe off, promoting gait efficiency. A distinct sensation of forward momentum is accentuated due to the WK450’s ingenious design, so can be traversed with ease.  With a progressive design and KEEN’s iconic comfort fit, the WK450 is equipped with an engineered mesh upper with TPU overlays for durability and neat lace closure using 100% recycled PET laces. A high rebound EVA midsole is light underfoot, delivering superb energy return, with KEEN’s Eco Anti Odor treatment ensuring feet stay smelling sweet without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides. Featuring a wide outsole platform to optimise stability, a high traction rubber outsole with multi-directional lugs ensures optimum traction on a wide variety of surfaces. Designed to be comfortable from the first step with a padded tongue and collar, a contoured fit hug and secures your foot, while giving plenty of room for toes to splay and move through the unique rolling sensation of the WK450.   Available in men and women’s specific editions, choose from a great range of on trend hues in the shoe edition or in the super versatile, sandal hybrid.  Ideal for summer wanderings, this sporty sandal features the same technology and features as the 450 shoe, but with a breathable vented upper constructed from upcycled textile waste and neat bungee cinch closure system for an adjustable and comfortably snug fit.

 Keen WK400

Offering a more athletic performance for fleet footed fitness walking, get some pep in your step in the original WK400 (£150), returning in exciting new colours for SS24.  A generous 30mm toe spring gives an exceptionally smooth and easy transition from heel strike through to toe off, promoting efficiency and conserving energy for an effortless ride when moving at pace or during longer walking challenges. A 10mm last drop between heel and forefoot further promotes forward momentum in your gait, whilst aiding stability and preventing the wearer from rocking backward.  The unique constant curve geometry, underfoot plate technology and a high-energy midsole create a distinct feeling of forward momentum that makes walking feel like rolling, with each step in the WK400 a natural accelerator of lower-leg movement. A contrast two finger webbing loop on the heel provides easy on and off, allowing you additional leverage to pull on and go when you are on the hoof.

On Cloudrock tested and reviewed

On are a swiss based company whose goal is to revolutionise the sensation of running, based on soft landing followed by explosive take-offs. Or as the brand call it, running on clouds.

So I did a thing. I signed up to do the Virgin Money London Marathon. Now I'm not a runner, I'm a cyclist. Annoyingly runners can transition to cycling with ease, whereas us superior athletes tend to struggle because our  far higher fitness levels exceed our muscle memory and ability to deal with impact. So not wanted to injure myself I obtained a pair of On Running Cloudswifts to test.

A couple of months back Adidas Terrex released a hiking range designed by women, for women and what better way to test it than for exactly that: a woman who enjoys the outdoors whether it is with friends, alone or on courses such as an introduction to foraging.
