Muck Boots Mudder Tall Boots - tested and reviewed

Written by

When we think of boots we're normally thinking something ankle high, but what if the mud and water goes way beyoond ankle high? That's where the Muck Boots Mudder Tall boots come in.

Whether it's at a festival, crossing a stream, fishing or even caving (a steel toe cap version is available) there are times when we welcome what we used to call "wellies" as kids. Well the Muck Boot Mudder Tall is that boot - reaching to mid calf height, one piece, waterproof not water resistant and with a decent outsole or tread. We've used Muck Boots before so knew the build quality was exceptional but we decided to put the Mudder to the test over the last few weeks to see what takes it beyond the standard welly.

What Muck Boots say:

Ideal for outdoor work in the mud and water, the Mudder outsole has specialised tread spacing with lug side profiles that allow you to grip the mud without the mud tracking with you. Made with a durable rubber compound, the outsole is oil, gas, cut, abrasion and slip resistant. This work boot was built specifically to secure the ankle into the back of the boot to reduce heel slip, so the mud won’t “eat” your boots! A dual density comfort footbed with memory foam for superior all-day comfort and support. With its superior surface traction, the new Mudder is designed to perform on wet or dry surfaces.

Muck Boots Mudder Tall Boots on test:

This summer's not been the wettest but when it's rained it's done so by the bucket load and it's given us the chance to really put the Mudder Tall to the test. From muddy tracks to running water we've been able to test the important aspects of waterproofing, grip and comfort, and overall we've come away impressed. No-one expects a "welly" to let in water but they're not renowned as the most comfortable and agile of footwear.

The first thing you notice with these boots is how soft the rubber is compared to a traditional welly, and how flexible they are when walking. At 15 1/2 inches they're not the tallest option, despite the name, but we'd say they're at the optimal height for most uses and they're surprisingly comfortable for even prolonged use. The Memory Foam dual density footbed is augmented by additional toe and heel protection even in the non-steely versions and the grip is up there with the standards you normally see in trekking boots. Of course, being rubber, there's also no concern with water getting in unless you take them beyond their depth.

In terms of sizing we'd say look at stepping up half a size from your normal footwear for optimum comfort and be prepared for a little more ankle support than you'd normally associate with this style of boot. The other noticeable difference with the Muck Boots Mudder Tall is that they feel warmer than traditional wellies thanks to the underfoot memory foam - and even after a few hours continuous use they don't smell like something that's just come out of a farmyard!

The grip is another area where they surprised us, not just in mud but noticeably in loose, water covered gravel, where the footing was less than optimal. Finally the abrasion resistance was a somewhat unexpected feature, resisting those annoying sharp pointed small stones that can often leave gouges on a boot on gravel.

The obvious issue is one of price, and to be fair it's way too early to say how long these boots will last and whether £100 is a good investment, but on first impression we'd say the Mudder Tall are going to last for years of use and abuse. The fit is ideal; close enough on the calf to prevent any flapping when walking but without being tight eben with trousers and waterproofs on inside them and the Memory Foam footbed should provide long lasting comfort where it really matters. So overall we'd say the price is justified; If you need total water protection, good grip and comfort despite hours of use it really is hard to imagine how they could be better.
